Teen-friendly bowls activities will be the focus of Bowls Victoria’s new participation program, Roll Up, after the state government announced funding to help address the concerning trend in teenagers becoming less and less active.

To help improve the landscape of underactive Victorian teenagers, Bowls Victoria’s will launch ‘Roll Up’ a participation program targeted at under 18s, which will be rolled out across Victoria in the last quarter of 2018.

Funded by the Andrews government through VicHealth, the cash injection is part of a $6 million commitment to Growing Participation in Sport. The initiative comes in response to VicHealth’s recent report highlighting that teenagers today are five times more likely to be on a smartphone or tablet device when they could be outside and being active.

To tempt teens away from their screens Bowls Victoria will be encouraging and assisting clubs to appeal to a younger demographic with a fun and entertaining social atmosphere that includes food, live music and other various forms of entertainment while enjoying a social game of bowls.

To help change the landscape of inactive Victorian teenagers, VicHealth has partnered with 19 sports, including Bowls Victoria, to reinvent the face of physical activity and promote sport, and its social offerings, as a fun and attractive entertainment option.

In the coming season, Bowls Victoria will pilot the program at a number of identified early adopter clubs and provide all clubs with the full scope of ‘Roll Up’ and how they can become involved in the program.
