2016 Victorian Open – Day 3
Forward went the star power in the men’s and women’s triples, as some all-star combinations marched through on Day 3 of the 2016 Victorian Open.
In the men’s triples, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Matthew Flapper (skip), state rep Brad Orr and Australian Open title winner Josh Thornton impressed in their sectionals, before powering into the men’s quarter-finals.
In an all-star clash, they saw off Cameron Wilson, Nathan Wilson and Matthew Robertson (skip) 16-8 in their second knockout match before a last 16 win over Gary Brimblecombe, Greg McDonald and Ian Brimblecombe (skip) from Wangaratta.
In the women’s triples, internationals Carla Krizanic (Australia) and Kelly McKerihen (Canada), and Victorian state player Victoria Troster, won through to the quarter-finals late on Monday night.
With the luxury of three-time Vic Open singles champion Krizanic to lead and Troster as second, the McKerihen-skipped trio won all three of their sectionals.
Then they saw off Cheryl Flapper (Essendon) and Marj McDonald (Cobram) – the latter in a close 13-11 round of 16 match – to make the last eight.
There they face an enthralling showdown against City of Echuca’s Veronica Kelly (skip), Pat Schram and Kerryn Evans, who have been in ominous touch through the sectionals and first two knockouts.
Also through to the women’s quarters are Louise Morison (Melbourne), Nicole O’Connor (Richmond Union) and skip Tara Ferrier (Melbourne BC), the always competitive Jan Morton (Sale, skip), Jane Ritchie (Wunghnu) and Caroline Reilly (Yarrawonga MGCR), and northern Victorian combo Anne Miles (skip), Laureen Smith and Claire Sanders.
Shepparton Park locals Bev Cahill (skip), Marg Smyth and Glenice Mawson are also in the last eight, as is a team skipped by State Over 60 women’s singles champion Edna Anderson (Warracknabeal Golf).
The men’s last eight include the team skipped by Nathan Lynch (Moonee Valley), while Liam Garlick-Adams, Dane McKinnon and Russell Green junior (skip) and teams skipped by Nick McIntyre (Whittlesea) and Shepparton Park local Glenn Power are into the last 16.
The men’s triples last eight won’t be finalised until all round of 16 matches are completed – most likely on Wednesday or Thursday.
