Leibler Yavneh College bowls us over
By Les Newman, Honorary Secretary – Armadale Bowls Club @ South Caulfield
Over the past few weeks Armadale Bowls Club at South Caulfield hosted 40 students and teachers on the green, in the lead up to Leibler Yavneh College selecting teams to compete in the Secondary Schools State Championships early next year.
Runners-up last year, all at Armadale BC hope they can go one better in 2017.
“Bowls Royalty” joined the students in the form of Bowls Victoria’s Participation Co-ordinator Sean O’Kane and champion bowler and Bowls Australia Regional Bowls Manager Barrie Lester.
Barrie had the students “eating out of his hand” as they absorbed and observed his coaching methods.
In a very short time he had each of them improving their style, and delivery, whilst having fun.
Our thanks to sports teachers Luke and Gloria, who assisted Martin Fingereth, Sharonna Brott and myself with the organisation of the sessions, and to Bowls Victoria for providing the small size bowls.
Martin, equipped with an old army whistle, made sure the students got the most out of each session.
We also wish Barrie well as he represents Australia in the World Championships in Christchurch from November 29 to December 11.
