Para-Bowls Season Launch & Change to Para Terminology
Bowls Victoria welcomes the introduction of the ‘Para’ reference to multi-disability program.
Bowls Victoria is continuing to develop further opportunities and expand on events for bowlers with a disability, such as the State Championships and the State Side. As such, we are please to advise members of an update to terminology in this area, specifically the use of the term ‘PARA’ throughout the events program, the BV website and all future communications.
While we recognise that phrases such as ‘all abilities’, ‘multi-disability, ‘bowls for people with a disability’ and ‘disability bowls’ have been and continue to be commonly used, the contemporary term of ‘Para’ is inclusive, and a better reflection of the activities undertaken by our bowlers.
So what does Para actually mean in relation to bowls?
For our sport, as it does in national and international sport, the term represents activities and events that occur in PARALLEL, most notably demonstrated by the Olympics and Paralympics.
Therefore, ‘Para’ will now be utilised as a broader and all-encompassing term for classified bowls activities.
Para includes the following categories:
- Para-Physical Bowls
- Para-Intellectual Bowls
- Para-Vision Bowls
- Para-Sensory Bowls
In the future, you will see references to Para events accessible to multiple disabilities, such as the State Para Championships, or specific references, such as Para-Physical classification days for people with a physical disability, or Para-Vision impaired, etc.
