2015 Victorian Open – day 3 women’s
There were hiccups and heroics as a number of teams had their ups and downs in women’s triples events at the Victorian Open on day three.
Lisa Phillips (Coatesville) and Melissa Larcombe (Broadbeach) continued their strong play after making it through to the final eight in the pairs yesterday teaming up with Hannah Boulton-Burns (Coatesville), easing through the sectional rounds with three comfortable wins.
The family affair of Lalor’s Gayle, Brooke and Blaine Edwards started the day well with a 16-13 win over Cahill, Mawson and Smyth then continued to progress through sectionals undefeated.
It was a much closer contest in the first knockout round with the Edwards trio coming out on top with a narrow 11-10 victory over Margaret Rowles, Joelen Bianchetto and Dafna Orbach.
Shepparton Park had a number of combinations worth sitting down to have a look at, but it was some close calls on teams progressing through sectionals that was the highlight of the morning’s play.
Carla Odgers and Elise Cowan (Sunbury) teamed up with Tayla Morison (Melbourne) and on paper looked the team to beat.
But a 19-15 loss in their second match meant Cobram’s Christine Dunne, Kerry Baldacchino and Marjorie McDonald pounced and progressed in a tightly contested section.
Things didn’t go well for Nicole Shortis, Jane McMenamen and Tiffany Brodie either, after a +15 shot difference wasn’t enough to progress.
The trio had a 14-10 win against the Bendigo East contingent of Susan Howes, Ann Borham and Browyn McDermott in the first round, however it was the Bendigo East trio who had the last laugh progressing with a shot difference of 21.
Defending champs Patti Pain, Mardi Chisholm and Julie Ross had a comfortable trip through their section remaining undefeated, however their run wouldn’t last much longer.
The Golden Square combination were outplayed by the Eastern Ranges trio of Karen Barton (Boronia), Linda Edwards (Blackburn) and Carol Protopapas (Heatherdale).
Victorian State representative Rebecca McMahon, Robyn Thomassen and Kellie Bowles began the day with a hard-fought 14-10 win over Seymour’s Alison Hall, Carol Harrop and Helen Flint. However the trio from Seymour bounced back to win their remaining matches and progress to the knockout stage.
