O60 State Carnival | Singles Wrap-Up
Days three and four of the O60 State Carnival was all about Singles.
Three hundred and thirty-three keen bowlers took to the greens around the Murray Mallee, in glorious sunshine, albeit frosty early, for the start of the Singles events on Wednesday, with Knockout play continuing today.
The forty-two women’s Sections were played at CluBarham, Kerang and Kerang Golf and Bowls Clubs, while the two hundred plus men, across sixty-nine Sections, enjoyed the greens and hospitality at Cohuna, Gunbower, Leitchville, Wakool & Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.
Following yesterday’s Sectional play, the men started with a Round of 128 this morning, playing four Rounds through to the Last 16, showcasing the talent in this group for the dozens of avid spectators. The same enthusiam and stellar performances were seen across the women’s field, as they went from a Round of 64 down to Quarter Finals, again with plenty of support from the sidelines among their peers. It was heartnening to see many entrants who had earlier been knocked out, come along to support their Section winners.
In the men’s field, the Quarter Finalists playing off against each other at 11.30am Sunday morning will be:
Michael Wilson (MCC) vs Tony Lange (Webbcona)
Ross Higgins (Numurkah) vs Chris Young (Chalambar Golf)
Steve Cunnington (Echuca) vs Ray Jansen (Whittlesea)
Peter Rowe (Timboon) vs Neil Crisp (City Memorial)
Again, a mix of City and Country bowlers, but the Country lads really stamped their gound in the latter rounds to be well represented in finals. Some very familiar names amongst the Quarter-Finalists – we’re expecting some great tussles going into the finals.

The women’s contenders are one Round further into the draw, with the Semi-Finalists already determined. At Quarter-Final stage, the eight women equally represented City and Country clubs, four a-piece. But as they fought it out to Semi-Final stage, just a lone regional bowler remains, with the other three hailing from Metro regions. Congratulations to the following women who are through to the Semi’s, also being played Sunday morning at 11.30am.
Lynne Wood (Narre Warren)
vs
Linda Emmett (Dandenong Club)
Denise Huender (MCC)
vs
Robyn Thomassen (Moama)
Well done to everyone who reached the Finals and to everyone who has participated so. The positive energy felt around all the clubs throughout the event so far, and the happy, smiling faces on so many bowlers, has been wonderful to witness.
Carnival participants now move on to the Men’s & Women’s Pairs events on Friday, with another ninety-six Pairs ready to lay claim to the inaugural State Pairs titles.
