2023-24 State Pennant Championships | Midweek

by Melanie Allen

Moama certainly turned on the weather for the hundreds of Pennant bowlers over the past four days at the 2023-24 Pennant State Championships, and we again entered the fourth and final day under warm, sunny and clear blue skies.

After the first day of play in the Midweek Championships, there was only a single 3-game winner across the two Sections, and it was Ocean Grove sitting on top of the Section two ladder. Their round four win against second placed Wangaratta secured the Grovers a spot in the final.

A draw against Portland RSL secured top spot for Lakes Entrance in Section one, with Bendigo and Middle Park hot on their heels, both with two wins a-piece.

Going into the fifth and final round, Ocean Grove were looking for a clean sweep, but were beaten by just one shot by Gisborne, 39-38. The Section one field was a bit tighter and the finals berth there for the taking by the top three on the leader board. Lakes Entrance just needed to hang on to win one more, but if Middle Park could topple Lakes, and Bendigo got the win over 6th placed Wonthaggi, it would be Bendigo taking on the Grovers, and that’s exactly how it played out.

With no-one going through the two days of play undefeated, the quality of the competition across the regions was definitely on show.

The final was exciting, and loud! Ocean Grove had their usual large contingent of Grovers supporters, and the local Bendgio Campaspe Goldfields region team provided plenty of local support for the Royals. But it was Ocean Grove’s time to shine, and they certainly sparkled, with all three rinks up.
