‘Team Gold’ lives up to their name

by Campbell Hymans

The 2023 APS Championship Season was completed after 6 rounds of friendly competition and hosted by Glen Waverley Bowls Club in which a newly structured tournament saw 10 schools sides fight to take the top spot. The battle for 1st place was extremely close and came down to the wire in the 5th round, which saw 1st vs 2nd play-off with Haileybury A gaining the points and putting immense pressure on ladder leaders St Kevin’s Gold.

Ensuring a thrilling Final Round, all eyes were on the scoreboards with 4 teams on the same number of wins with the potential of a huge upset. However St Kevin’s Gold recovered well from the previous week’s defeat to bounce back by capitalising on their attacking game to hold off Haileybury A.

It was great to see all schools working closely with their local bowls clubs, allowing them to train weekly with the benefit of being coached by their outstanding support staff. A great example of the importance to reach out to your local schools and form strong connections as there are many superb school competitions available to enter.

Bowls Victoria would like to thank all the APS schools for their involvement and a special thanks to Glen Waverley Bowls Club for opening up their fantastic facilities and helping us introduce our great sport to the next generation.
