Victoria’s men crowned 2016 national champions
Victoria’s men have won their first Australian Sides Championship in 14 years, taking out the 2016 Alley Shield for champion men’s state.
The National Sides victory, iced with a win over Tasmania to keep Victoria unbeaten in their seven round-robin matches during the tournament in Queanbeyan, is Victoria’s first Alley Shield triumph since 2002.
The only team that could wrest the trophy from Victoria, defending champions NSW, lost 59-57 to South Australia in a match being played simultaneously.
That meant the eventual result against Tasmania didn’t matter, but the Vics still finished with a flourish to run out 57-52 winners over the Tasmanians.
It is Victoria’s first National Sides crown since Victoria’s women won their title in 2004.
Victoria’s champion 12-man team is Liam Garlick-Adams, Nathan Wilson, Brett Spurr, Aaron Wilson (s); Josh Corless, Dale Jones, Nick McIntyre, Barrie Lester (s); Dane McKinnon, Brad Orr, Dylan Fisher, Matthew Flapper (s).
NSW won the women’s national title – the Marj Morris Trophy – for the fifth consecutive year. Victoria’s women finished third.
