2015 Victorian Open – day 7 update

by Team BV

The 2015 Victorian Open has crowned its first champions – and one of them is set for several repeat visits to the presentation ceremony.
Lisa Phillips (Coatesville BC) won the first of her three finals on Friday at Shepparton Park Bowls Club, teaming with Nick McIntyre (Whittlesea) for a mixed pairs triumph.
The duo won a high-quality contest against Victorian under-18s Jordan Yates (Glenroy) and Amelia Bruggy (Bendigo) 15-5 after 14 ends.
McIntyre was particularly red-hot when it was required, and the pivotal moment in the contest came when leading 9-5, he and Phillips wrapped up a four on the 12th end to shut down the contest.
Teenagers Yates and Bruggy also had their moments, but just couldn’t keep pace with their more experienced rivals.
Earlier, Broadbeach BC’s Gail Waitai skipped the winning women’s triples team, then promised to bring back a swag of Gold Coast visitors for next year’s Open.
Waitai and Moama Bowling Club duo Laurelle Smith and Merilyn Rehe won a beauty of a triples final 14-12 over Yarrawonga’s Joy Johnson, Claire Sanders and Anne Miles.
It was a game of the highest quality and tension, and interstate visitor Waitai had nothing but praise for the tournament and those involved.
“What a fabulous tournament this is,” she said.
“The volunteers here are just tremendous. My little team from Moama have just done a wonderful job.
“I can guarantee we’ll be back next year and bring loads and loads of Broadbeach girls back with us.”
In the men’s triples final, City Of Echuca BC’s Matthew Liverson, Phillip Thorn and Wayne Brooks were victorious over Bendigo’s Barry Anset and Shepparton locals Geoff Franze (East Shepparton) and Dennis McHarry (Shepparton RSL).
