2015 Victorian Open – day 5 mixed pairs

by Team BV

The fairytale run of Gail from Sale and Dancin’ Frank ended at the Vic Open on Wednesday, but that of Coatesville BC’s Lisa Phillips continued.
Crowd favourites Gail McKenzie (Sale Golf) and Frank Watson (Shepparton Park) bowed out in the last 16 of the mixed pairs, losing to Winston Brackley and Kaye Robison after thrilling the crowd over the past two days with banter and brilliance, and the occasional viral video dance moment.
But Phillips marched another step closer to a final, and a possible Vic Medal, with another huge day capped off by booking a mixed pairs semi-final berth.
Phillips and Nick McIntyre (Whittlesea) moved into the mixed pairs final four, adding to Phillips making the quarter-finals of the women’s singles, and semi-finals of the women’s triples.
Phillips and teammates Hannah Boulton-Burns and Melissa Larcombe lost their triples semi, but Phillips remains in contention in three events, still alive also in the women’s pairs quarter-finals.
She and McIntyre beat Jan O’Regan and Josh Sanders 16-9 in the quarters to book a semi-final against Brackley and Robison, who have been super-solid all week.
They ousted Essendon’s Nathan Wilson and Australia rep Chloe Stewart (Kyneton) by a shot in the quarter-finals.
Under 18s Jordan Yates (Glenroy) and Amelia Bruggy (Bendigo), and Josh Corless and Makayla Gibson (Bundoora RSL) will do battle in the other mixed pairs semi on Thursday.
