Special day for Whitehead as Victoria test Tassie on day one

Victoria’s state teams descended on Hobart this week to take on Tasmania in the annual Test Match.

A 24-strong squad headed to Sandy Bay Bowling Club yesterday, with both teams hoping to continue their winning streak from 2017 which saw the Men’s and Woman’s side secure a victory.

With five tests to be played over three days of competition, Victoria went in all guns blazing on day one to claim the First Test with both the Men’s and Women’s teams defeating their Tasmania counterparts 64 to 59 and 68 to 47 respectively.

The Women’s team continued their winning streak in the Second Test to go back-to-back with 78 to 41 victory, while the Men narrowly missed a win going down by one shot 70 to 71.

With two games to be played today and a further one tomorrow morning, it’s still anyone’s game in the quest to take home the French Holbrook Shield (Men) and the Valmai Lewis Shield (Women).

It was also a special day for Kylie Whitehead as she celebrated 100 games for Victoria. Since getting hooked on bowls following a come and try day with her grandfather nearing a decade ago, Whitehead has achieved enormous success in the game.

Last year the Wodonga local won the Australian singles title at Merimbula, while in April this year she took out the Victorian Champion of Champions event at Bendigo East; a victory that qualified her for the Australian Champion of Champions and an event she went on to win in the singles.
