Plenty of pride for Plenty Parklands

by Campbell Hymans

In 2023, Bowls Victoria again partnered with School Sports Victoria (SSV) to give an opportunity for primary school students to showcase their talent and represent their school by competing in the Victorian State Bowls Championship.

The primary school competitions started in Term 1 at district level all around Victoria, with schools aiming to reach the State Final as regional representatives. The competition saw over 1,200 students competing with the aim of making the State Final which was held at Club Sunbury on Thursday the 5th of May.

Congratulations to everyone that entered a side with many students showing interest in wanting to participate in our great game. The State Final was played at a high quality with spirited young competitors which showcased our State’s up-and-coming talent. The winners were Plenty Parklands (Northern Metro) and runners-up Paynesville PS (Gippsland) with the scores 8 v 7, following this season’s modified scoring method. It was fantastic to see so many students bowling for their local clubs as a pathway for these young guns to join our junior/region programs.

There were many highlights to be shared across the year, with Campaspe Division having a record high number of entries with 16 team entries and over 190 students participating within this division alone. It was exciting to see the relationships formed between bowls clubs and schools, demonstrating viable strategies for clubs to promote their very own junior bowls programs by connecting with our younger demographic.

I would like to say a huge thank-you to all the host clubs, it’s a great day seeing so many students enjoying the bowling greens and having a tremendous amount of fun!
