Vale Margaret Sumner OAM
1941 – 2022
It is with sadness to acknowledge the passing of Bowls Victoria and Bowls Australia Hall of Famer Margaret Sumner OAM.
Margaret commenced her bowling career in 1979 at Terang Bowling Club, where she won the Club Singles title 15 times, while representing Victoria in 132 state matches plus 168 Australian matches. Margaret won State and National Singles titles as well as National Pairs and Fours titles between 1991 and 1999, and a 2-times Commonwealth Games representative.

Margaret’s stellar list of achievements included:

- District Champion of Champions 12 times
- State Champion of Champion 1987, 1996 and 2002
- State Singles Champion 1997
- Australian Champion – Singles 1999, Pairs 1991 and 1992, Fours 1995
- Australia Representative 168 times (maybe more)
- Victoria Representative 132 times
- 1992 World Championships, Bronze Medal Fours)
- 1994 Commonwealth Games, Victoria, Canada
- 1996 World Championships, gold medal Fours, silver medal Triples
- 1996 Pacific Championships, silver medals Fours and Triples
- 1998 Commonwealth Games, silver medal Fours
- 1998 Pacific Championships, Warilla, Australia, gold medals Fours and Triples
- 1996-2002 Trans-Tasman Series, five gold and two silver medals Fours and Triples
- 2011 Bowls Australia Hall of Fame inductee
- 2020 Bowls Victoria Hall of Fame inductee

Post career Margaret was never far from the green, actively playing into her 80’s and a staple at every State Championships hosted in Bendigo. With a smile, a keen eye and an amazing knowledge of her beloved sport, Margaret kept notes and stats on the games she watched in her trusty notebook. No doubt for later review and hearty discussion down the track with fellow lovers of bowls.
Our thoughts are with Margaret’s family, including Shirley, Maureen, Michael and Kevin at this time.
