Victorian State Teams Announced

by Melanie Allen

Bowls Victoria is excited to announce our Men’s & Women’s State Teams, who will be heading to Tassie to compete in the first VIC v TAS Test in Burnie later this month.

The City v Country Series saw Country winning both the men’s and women’s series in its inaugural year.

When asked about the new format City v Country series, State Coach Ian Ewing said, “I was really happy with the intent, the way the players have taken to the new concept and the effort they all put in. Players actions speak volumes for how the event has been received”.

“Although the Country sides dominated this inaugural Series, the calibre of bowls witnessed by selectors and spectators at last weekend’s men’s event was on par with what we expect at State and even National level”, said selector Matt Robertson. “It just goes to show that this new City v Country Series really had players firing, regardless of the result, and is a step in the right direction for State level bowls”.

The final game of the men’s Series saw some elite level shots pulled out and showed some of the first- timers what it’s all about.

Men’s Country squad Captain, Matt Flapper, summed the event up when accepting the winner’s trophy for the men’s squad, “This is by far the best State trial I’ve been involved with in over 20 years, so thanks and congratulations to Bowls Victoria for initiating this concept”.

The soon to be released Victorian State uniform was well received by the players and selectors alike when given an early preview at the City v Country Series.

“We’re rapt to see that Bowls Victoria has brought back the navy blue, with the most recognisable icon in State sport, the Big V,” said Ewing.
