U18 State Coach and Talent Search Announced
Bowls Victoria is pleased to announce that the legendary Matthew Flapper will be returning as the Victorian U18 State coach for 2021/22. With the impending Under-18 National Championships taking place as part of Bowls Australia’s Nationals this October in Broadbeach, Matt will not only take the reigns as coach but is also heading up selection of both the U18 male and female sides in the coming months.
“I am excited to be given the opportunity by Bowls Victoria to return to the position of Victorian U18 Coach,” said Flapper.
“Everything happens for a reason and the pandemic gave Bowls Victoria a chance to review the whole U18 program and implement some new structures that will be both exciting and rewarding for all those involved. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time previously with the U18 squad and look forward to returning to the role, guiding and mentoring our next generation of stars and helping them take their game to the next level.”
The U18’s journey to potentially get to Nationals will commence with a Talent Search event, being held on Saturday 3rd July, at Club Sunbury. This new event is a fantastic opportunity for junior bowlers who wish to be considered for U18 state selection to put their skills on display. Those attending will enjoy the chance to interact with their peers and mingle with selectors as well as the state coach, who will all be on the lookout for our state’s most promising young talent.

A shortlisted squad of U18 bowlers will be announced following this event who will then be invited to trial for State selection.
It is not compulsory for juniors to attend the Talent Search event, but it is recommended. Criteria to be shortlisted for the U18 squads will also be based on recent State events including U18 Championships, Doug Kneebone Tournament, Region Sides and State Champions Week.
