Update: National Bowlers Arm Championships

by Team BV

Day 4:

Victoria secured the Championships early on the final day after a stellar four days of armed bowling.

With a three rink win over New South Wales’ Fours Side, we amounted an unsurpassable 19 point lead which was advantageous as our fortunes turned quickly in the Pairs, conceding all three rinks for the first time in the competition, against Queensland.

New South Wales stepped up and simply out-bowled Victoria in the Singles, winning two rinks convincingly. However Croydon Bowls Club’s Michael Rose remained undefeated in the discipline during the entire tournament after defeating Ian Mann.

Our Triples Team lead by Skips Greg Richie, Rod Fletcher and Lee Wesley were determined to finish the Championships with wins against Queensland, 22 to 8, 17 to 13 and 16 to 6.

Overall Victoria won each of the state vs state head-to-head Shields being contested, and amazingly it has been seven consecutive years of dominance by our Armed Vics Sides. We couldn’t be more proud.

Bowls Victoria wish to thank Tranmere Bowling & Tennis Club’s army of volunteers. We sincerely thank all individuals who have contributed to making these Championships a success on and off the green.

Day 4 Results (12/09/2019)

Day 3:

Consistency was king for the most part as our Armed Vics prevailed on Day 3 of the National Bowlers Arm Championships.

South Australia proved to be worthy opponents in the Fours with four shots on the final end securing a vital win by Lee Wesley, after a defeat in Barry Anset’s rink and a win for Damien Riches’ team.

The Triples saw Victoria dominate Western Australia with three easy wins led by Skips Ken Sutcliffe 28 to 5, Stephen Coles 22 to 10 and Rod Fletcher 21 to 7.

Armed Vics teammates Ann Power, Lee Wesley and Adele Ryan.

It was a big day in the Pairs with Victoria taking on both Tasmania and WA, with only one rink falling short to the Western Australian “Sandgropers”.

The Singles saw Ken Sutcliffe, Michael Rose and Neil Crisp play South Australians Ron Adam, Phil Sanders and Rodney Egge respectively. All close matches early on with Victoria managing to secure all three rinks 21/17, 21/12 and 21/6.

The morning of Day 4 sees the Armed Vics with a 19 point lead with the NSW’s Singles and Fours teams in their sights.

DAY 2:

Victoria remains on top of the tables as the Armed Vics head into day three of the National Bowlers Arm Championships in South Australia.

Tuesday saw Victoria and Western Australia go head to head in the singles and fours events, with the Wesley and Blurton game a standout. In what was a close game throughout, after 14 ends Victoria was down 11/13. Wesley’s last bowl was a reaching shot which sliced the kitty perfectly to Victoria’s two back bowls to enabling a tie. After Round 3, Victoria held eight points clear of New South Wales who are now in second place.

The singles saw a close game between Victoria’s Michael Rose and 85-year-old Mitch Brown. There was almost nothing between the pair, with Rose holding a small lead 20/17.

Two near misses at draw weight, including one that was going to take the kitty back to two other bowls, weren’t enough to save the game for the western state.

At the time of writing, Victoria remained on top of the leaderboard on day three and 15 points clear.

The 2019 National Bowlers Arm Championships are being contested at Tranmere Bowls Club from September 9-12.
