Robert Briglia has been crowned the 2019 Australian Indoors Champion at Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

The Victorian went head-to-head with New South Welshman Aaron Teys (Warilla) after defeating Dane McKinnon (Altona) in the semi-final.

In what was a thrilling final round, it went down to the wire with a tie-break and three extra ends needed to determine a winner.

In just his second Indoors appearance, Briglia fought hard in the second set to win and backed this up in the tie-breaker to secure the Australian title.

The Middle Park Bowling Club member came into the week with a plan of achieving a semi-final berth. He managed to go one better and was speechless after the game.

“With that last bowl coming down the end, my hair was standing on end. It’s amazing. It’s a wonderful tournament and I’ve enjoyed every moment,” Briglia said after the game.

“I’m definitetly proud. I’ve had a lot of support from the team that has been with me; my coach and training team who I go to on a regular basis. It’s just been phenomenal.”

With his victory, Briglia will represent Australia in the World Bowls Championships on the Gold Coast from 23 May – 7 June 2020.
