New Junior League for Next-Gen Bowlers

by Sean O'Kane

A new junior bowls competition was launched across Metropolitan Melbourne in 2019 to provide competitive playing opportunities to bowlers under the age of 18.

Bowls Victoria’s Junior League is a weekend morning competition designed to enhance playing opportunities for junior bowlers where they can bowl against their peers, whilst representing a Bowls Victoria affiliated club.

Played over eight weeks, the competition is open to any bowler who is a junior with a Bowls Victoria club and is under 18 years of age prior to the season commencement.

The competition will also serve to connect juniors who participate in Bowls Victoria’s school and Roll Up programs with a local Metropolitan club and, if already playing Pennant for their club, offer an opportunity to talented juniors to play with other under-18 players.

Bowls Victoria is excited about the new junior competition and is keen to see Metropolitan clubs jump on board and support the competition.

We encourage clubs to support this great junior sport initiative. Our sport is social, accessible and non-contact. Anyone can win, regardless of experience due to the unpredictable nature of the game.

Junior League provides a wonderful opportunity for our younger bowlers, with a game and season format that is short, sharp and tailored to the under-18 audience.

Each year, over 8,000 Victorian school students, both primary and secondary, engage in a Bowls Victoria school bowls program. Junior League has been designed to assist with retaining and developing kids’ interest in our sport for the long term. Junior League will become that pathway in a form of an inter-club competition that is structured and run consistently across all clubs.

As part of the Junior League, clubs who enter a team will receive their own branding for use. An example of these are below.

Bowls Victoria is encouraging Metropolitan clubs to consider taking this opportunity to invest in the next generation of bowlers by entering a team in this competition. Dates for the 2021 season will be available in early 2021.
