Day 5 Wrap: State Champions Week

Spectators were out in force for day five of State Champions Week at Bendigo East Bowls Club.

The morning saw the commencement of the Men’s Champion of Champions Singles (Last 16), Women’s Triples Championship (Last 16) and Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Semi-Final and Men’s Fours Championship Semi Final.

Brad Lancaster (Gippsland) and Barrie Lester (Sandbelt) had a tight tussle on their rink. Scores were level after 24 ends a further end was required to determine the winner. A close measure saw Lester take the victory and progress to the afternoon’s quarter-final where he met and defeated Strzelecki’s, Mark Atkinson. Lester will go head-to-head Mark Cowan (Northern Gateway) after he defeated Colin Johnson (Central Victoria).

Carla Krizanic (Northern Gateway) faced defending title holder Kylie Whitehead (Ovens & Murray) in the Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Semi-Final, with Krizanic taking the victory 25 to 20 to meet Ann McCarthy (Sandbelt) in the final. The dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist going on to secure her third Champion of Champions title.

In the Women’s Triples Championship Quarter Finals, Val Hardy, Judy Beesley and Jo Martin (Gippsland) will take on Patti Pain, Mardi Chisholm and Julie Ross (Bendigo Campaspe). While Carol Harrop, Helen Flint and Alison Hall (Central Goulburn Murray) will play Sophie Kurzsman, Jenny Harman and Elizabeth Kierce (Central Victoria).

Josh Barry, James Pearce, Ray Morrisey and Brett Mahoney (Metro West) met Bendigo Campaspe’s Grant Woodward, Paul Moller, Paul Vlaeminck and Brad Marron in the Men’s Fours Championship Final this afternoon, with Metro West boys securing the title 23 to 7.

The Women’s Arm Bowls Pairs Championship saw Ann Power and Pamela Bryant defeat Vera Curnow and Joan Moss. Due to double ups yesterday, the Multi-Disabilities Championships Physical Singles we also played today between Josh Barry and Greg Toy, with Toy taking the title. This year, the Multi-Disabilities Championships were generously supported by the Berwick Bowls Club.
