Day 4 Wrap: State Champions Week
Day four of State Champions Week saw a jam-packed schedule at Bendigo East Bowls Club with 14 events run and won.
The morning rounds commenced with the Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Last 16, Men’s Fours Last 16, Men’s Triples Semi-Finals and the Women’s Fours Semi-Finals. The Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Quarter Finals, Men’s Fours Quarter Finals, Men’s Triples Final and the Women’s Fours Final were all contested in the afternoon.
James Federico, Nathan Lynch and Nathan Lewis (Northern Gateway) won their way into the Men’s Triples Final, after defeating Ray Kennedy, Rusell Lambourn and Matthew Higgins (Gippsland) 10 to 20, to meet Graeme Spencer, Geoffrey Robinson and Ali Forsyth (Sandbelt) in the medal match, which saw Sandbelt take the victory.
In the Women’s Fours Final, Lorna Wilson, Ina Heywood, Ann Williams and Evelyn Locke (Bendigo Campaspe) met Tiffany Brodie, Courtney Gabb, Kelly McKerihen and Lisa Phillips (Sandbelt), with this year’s championship title going to the girls from Sandbelt.
In the Men’s Fours, Grant Woodward, Paul Moller, Paul Vlaeminck and Brad Marron (Bendigo Campaspe), Will Matthews, Noel Sutherland, Ian Warner and Anthony Holland (Central Victoria), Russell Grey, Lance Kelly, Zane Lugg and Craig Elliott (Geelong) and Josh Barry, James Pearce, Ray Morrisey and Brett Mahoney (Metro West) all progressed to the Quarter Finals.
The Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Quarter Finals saw Carla Krizanic (Northern Gateway), Kylie Whitehead (Ovens & Murray), Ann McCarthy (Sandbelt) and Kaye Rowe (Bendigo Campaspe) all progress to tomorrow’s Semi-Final.
Several other finals were also run concurrently throughout the afternoon, including the Under-18 Singles Championship, Novice Singles Championship and the Multi-Disabilities Championships.
The Men’s and Women’s Novice Singles title went to Ryder Byrnes (Metro West) and Jess Ashcroft (Northern Gateway). Cooper Wescombe took home the under-18 boys title and Jordan Long took home the girls.
In the Multi-Disabilities Championships, Josh Barry and Barry Brennan won the Physical Paris. In the Intellectual Pairs, Steven Nelson and Ben Peachey were victorious, while the Intellectual Singles title went to David Connell. The Physical Singles will be contested tomorrow between Josh Barry and Greg Toy.
