Day 3 Wrap: State Champions Week

Wet weather greeter players on day three of State Champions Week and the busiest day of competition.

Play got underway with the Men’s Triples Championship (Last 16), Women’s Fours Championship (Last 16) and Women’s Singles Championship (Semi-Finals). This was followed by the Men’s Triples Championship (Quarter Finals), Women’s Fours Championship (Quarter Finals) and the Men’s and Women’s Singles Championship (Final) in the afternoon.

In the Women’s Singles Championship Semi-Finals Kylie Whitehead (Ovens & Murray) progressed to the final after winning her game against Jan Richardson (Peninsula Casey). Whitehead faced Vicki Smith (Eastern Ranges) who secured her spot after defeating local Julie Ross (Bendigo Campaspe).

The final saw a tight tussle early between Whitehead and Smith with the scores level after seven ends, but Whitehead picked up the pace to take the title 25 to 17. Brett Mahoney (Metro West) and Jay Bye-Norris (Northern Gateway) met in the Men’s Singles Final after the pair won their respective Semi-Finals yesterday. Bye-Norris secured the victory 25 to 19.

In the Men’s Triples, Daniel Hudson, Ryan Drummond and Neil Devlin (Peninsula Casey) went head-to-head with Graeme Spencer, Geoffrey Robinson and Ali Forsyth (Sandbelt) in the Men’s Triples Semi-Final played tonight, which saw the boys from Sandbelt head into tomorrow’s final after a 19 to 8 victory.

While James Federico, Nathan Lynch and Nathan Lewis (Northern Gateway) are set to play Ray Kennedy, Rusell Lambourn and Matthew Higgins (Gippsland) to determine the second finalist tomorrow.

In the Semi-Finals of the Women’s Fours Lorna Wilson, Ina Heywood, Ann Williams, Evelyn Locke (Bendigo Campaspe) will play Sandra Wilde, Val Moore, Lois Brock, Jennifer Bainbridge (Peninsula Casey), while Tiffany Brodie, Courtney Gabb, Kelly McKerihen and Lisa Phillips (Sandbelt) will take on Anne Draffen, Janine Roberts, Sandra Grano and Michelle Tait (Central Victoria)
