Day 2 Wrap: State Champions Week

Sunny conditions greeted players on day two of State Champions Week at Bendigo East Bowling Club.

Day two commenced with an official Anzac Commemoration Service, which was led by returned soldier Gary Ryan from Bendigo East Bowling Club. Players, officials, volunteers and spectators gathered to remember those who served and sacrificed for their country.

Pairs semi-finals were run and won, with Ben Simmons and Ben Winther (Northern Gateway) taking on Geoffrey Robinson and Ali Forsyth (Sandbelt) and Courtney Gabb and Kelly McKerihen (Sandbelt) up against Gail McKenzie and Jan Morton (Gippsland).

In the end, the day went to Sandbelt and Gippsland with Geoffrey Robinson and Ali Forsyth taking the title in the men’s Pairs and Gail McKenzie and Jan Morton in the women’s.

The men’s and women’s Singles also commenced today with the last 16 and quarter-finals played across both sections. Matthew Higgins (Gippsland), Jay Bye-Norris (Northern Gateway), Brett Mahoney (Metro West) and Andrew Sharp (Wimmera) all progressed to the semi-finals. Due to double ups, the men’s semi-final were played this afternoon with Brett Mahoney (Metro West) and Jay Bye-Norris (Northern Gateway) entering tomorrow men’s singles final.

Kylie Whitehead (Ovens & Murray), Vicki Smith (Eastern Ranges), Jan Richardson (Peninsula Casey) and Julie Ross (Bendigo Campaspe) played  through to the women’s singles quarter-finals with the semi-finals set for tomorrow.

The Disability Championships started at Golden Square Bowls Club with wins to David Connell and Natalie Brennan in the Intellectual Pairs, with other games still underway.

Day three will commence at 9:30 AM tomorrow and will feature the men’s triples (last 16 and quarter-final) and women’s fours (last 16 and quarter-finals).
