Swan Hill Ready For Women’s Region Sides

More than 200 bowlers will descend on the Murray Downs Golf and Country Club this week for the Women’s Region Sides Championship.

The Bowls Victoria event, which is supported by Swan Hill Rural City Council, will be contested over three days and showcases female bowlers from Victoria’s 16 bowls regions: Murray Mallee, Northern Gateway, Central Victoria, Peninsula Casey, Bendigo Campaspe, Eastern Ranges, Central Goulburn Murray, Wimmera, Strezelecki, West Coast, Metro West, Yarra, Ovens and Murray, Geelong, Sandbelt and Gippsland.

Playing for the Northern Gateway is 2018 Steller Victorian Open Singles Champion Mikayla Long (Sunbury), and 2019 Taylor Bowls Premier Division Champions player Cheryl Flapper (Essendon). Anne Draffen (Webbcona), who was recently selected for Victoria’s National Sides Championships team, will represent Central Victoria.

Playing for Bendigo Campaspe is Victorian over-60s player Marilyn Stephenson (Moama) who will roll up alongside fellow Over-60s player Kaye Rowe (Eaglehawk). 2018 Steller Victorian Open Women’s Triples finalists Lynda Edwards (Blackburn), Vicki Hudson (Heathmont) and Vicki Smith (Lilydale) will represent the Eastern Ranges along with young gun Amity Bickley (Mulgrave).

Victorian under-18 player Olivia Cartwright (Kyabram) and 2018 Steller Victorian Open Women’s Singles finalist Alison Hall will form part of the Central Goulburn Murray team.

2018 Steller Victorian Open Mixed Pairs winner Tris Doolan (MCC) will hit the green with the Yarra team, while St Kilda’s Courtney Gabb will represent the Sandbelt region alongside Canada’s 2018 Commonwealth Games representative Kelly McKerihen (Clayton).

The 2019 Women’s Region Sides will be held on March 29-31 at Murray Downs Golf and Country Club. The men’s section of the event will follow next week at Traralgon Bowls Club.
