Youth shine at Junior Bowls Classic
Churchill Waverley Golf and Bowls Club played host to the Victorian Junior Bowls Classic this week with 39 under-18 players taking to the green in near perfect conditions.
The Victorian Junior Bowls Classic provides junior bowlers of all abilities the opportunity to test their bowling skills in a competition format. A number of first-time players joined the field this year, together with those who play the event annually at the leafy outer east club, which has hosted the triples event for the last three years.
Metropolitan and country areas were well represented this year, with 13 teams playing sectionals to determine the two teams who would go head-to-head and playoff in a final of seven ends.
Jack Thompson (Moonee Valley), Kyle Williams (Whittlesea) and Cooper Wescombe (Glenroy) met Fitzroy’s Noah Shute, Finnian Farrel and Samuel Dakin in what was a tightly contested final.
Rolling undefeated all day, Thompson, Williams and Wescombe went into the final showing winning form. With scores level going into the last end, it was anyone’s game, but the boys from the west managed to pick up four shots on the seventh end to secure the title, eight shots to four.
Bowls Victoria would like to thank and acknowledges the efforts of Matthew Taylor, Pat Smythe and Ray McDonald for their hand in planning and organising a hugely successful event alongside our Participation Team.
Further to this, is the ongoing support from the Churchill Waverley Golf and Bowls Club and their team of volunteers, Graeme Hattwell, Kerryn Hattwell, Cecilia Mann, Maureen McDonald; Marj Barrie, Els Hogan, Jim Scoular and Theo Kiekebosch.
Events like the Victorian Junior Bowls Classic this don’t happen without the support of our clubs, their members and the broader bowls community.
