Bowls marathon set to support MND Victoria and Pancare

by Team BV

In 2015 the Heathcote Bowling Club was touched by Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after a club member was diagnosed with the debilitating disease.

A group of club members came together with the idea of helping their mate, and 26 days later, $22,000 was raised in a 24-hour bowls marathon.

So was born, the Australia Day fundraiser for MND, and a dedicated fundraising committee, the NEVER GIVE UP GROUP Inc. Their aim is simple – to raise funds and awareness for MND. While modest in their endeavours, they have a simple philosophy; if they raise $250, it is $250 MND didn’t have yesterday.

Every Australia Day Heathcote Bowling Club holds different bowls events, and this year the club is going back to where it all began with a 24-hour bowls marathon.

Daniel Woodrow from MND Victoria and a State Representative player, together with his partner Stacey, will play the full 24 hours. Woodrow will play against all comers, as well as two exhibition games.

This year the Club has also invited Pancare to share in the proceeds from the event. The exhibition matches will see Woodrow play for MND and his opponent for Pancare.

Pancare was the official charity partner at this year’s Steller Victorian Open and a tribute to Chris O’Meagher, a well-known face around the Victorian bowls community, and a loyal supporter of the Steller Victorian Open for many years. Chris, unfortunately, lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer late last year.

Heathcote Bowling Club is inviting EVERYBODY to come along and get involved in the 24-hour bowls marathon and support two worthy causes. Download the Event Flyer
