St Kilda score hat trick after win at Whittlesea

by Team BV

St Kilda won a thriller at Whittlesea on Saturday going three in a row for the first time.

Whittlesea looked to have gained the upper hand when they led by 12 with 20 ends to go, but a strong fightback on all St Kilda rinks got the Saints over the line.

The standout performance was from St Kilda coach Brett Spurr who produced a match-winning game in his 26-24 win over Guy Spiden. In a tight match, Spiden gained a 5 on the 19th end, to give Whittlesea a one-shot lead before Spurr returned fire with a crucial 4 and held on to win by 2.

Matty Ellul also reinforced why he is a Victorian skip with a gutsy 20-18 win over Nick McIntyre.  Ellul trailed by 7 shots after 13 ends before winning 7 of the last 8 ends in a superb display.

Natasha Scott looked to be in trouble against Ben Winther when she trailed 11-18 with three to play, but her strong 5-shot fightback was a major factor in St Kilda getting over the line.

Jayson Brewer’s rink continued its solid form in a seesawing match against Luke Eddington. Brewer was leading by one with the last bowl of the day in his hand and Whittlesea holding, before he drew an excellent shot to secure the rink win and a valuable extra point.
