2018 Over 60s Championships – Preview

by Sean O'Kane

After being apart for many years and played as two separate events, the Over 60s Championships are now being run as a combined event from the 12th-14th of December at City of Frankston Bowls Club.

This event welcomes 16 singles players and 16 pairs teams who will play in a knockout format to determine the Over 60s Champions of Victoria. The Singles and Pairs invitees are nominations given to Bowls Victoria after Division and Region Over 60s Championships are played.

The 2018 event will be similar to the 2017 with Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles as well as Men’s Pairs and Women’s Pairs being contested.

Last year, in a tight Men’s Singles competition, Gary Body from Camperdown Bowls Club was the champion, in the Men’s Pairs, MCC Bowls Club duo Tom Ristic and Paul Morris took the championship honours.

In the Women’s competition, Beryl Eddy and Sandra Connolly from Moama Bowls Club took out the Pairs Championship, and recent Over 60s Victorian Representative Mary Tragardh won the Women’s Singles.

A few familiar faces from the business end of the 2018 Victorian Open will be in attendance including: Women’s Triples Champion from Shepparton Park BC Bev Cahill playing pairs, Women’s Triples Runner Up Lynda Edwards from Blackburn BC in the Singles and 2016 Vic Medal winner and current Victorian State Player Anne Miles in the Women’s Pairs. On the Men’s side, previous Victorian Under 18 Head Coach Mark Cowan from Sunbury BC will be playing pairs.

The event will be held at the progressive City of Frankston Bowls Club. Located in the Mornington Peninsula Bowls Region, City of Frankston was also the host of World Bowls in 1980 and more recently the host of Bowls Victoria’s Bowlers Arm Championships in January, 2018.

Singles will begin on Wednesday the 12th @ 10am and Pairs will begin on Thursday the 13th at 10am.
