ST KILDA CHICKS HIGHLIGHT IN LOSS TO YARRAVILLE-FOOTSCRAY

St Kilda’s first week in Premier Division proved to be a baptism of fire with a loss to Yarravile-Footscray, but the highlight was a win by the St Kilda Chicks.

St Kilda made a bold selection decision by choosing an all-female rink of State players Makayla Gibson, Courtney Gabb, Tiffany Brodie and dual Commonwealth Gold medallist Natasha Scott.

The gamble appeared to have backfired when the St Kilda Chicks were trailing 12-0 after 5 ends. However, a stunning comeback saw them clinch a vital win 21-20 on the last end.

Jayson Brewer’s rink was also well up for St Kilda, leading 14-7 after 12 ends before a brilliant Winston Brackley conversion turned the game on its head. Brackley’s rink took hold from that point and ran out 31-18 victors.

Yarraville-Footscray were well in charge on the other two rinks.

Wayne Roberts got away to a 22-0 lead before running out comfortable 30-11 victors over John Free.

Nelson Ball won 29-13 over St Kilda coach Brett Spurr in a 14 ends to 7 victory, despite a best on rink performance by rookie lead Justin “Chucky” Newton-Brown.

ALTONA VS WHITTLESEA

Altona travelled to Whittlesea to take on last year’s Division 1 Premiers in their first Premier League game.

It was a magnificent day for bowls, on a 15sec green, the game was evenly balanced early with the rinks of Wilson and McKinnon on top of Winther and Spiden, while the rinks of Brooks and Eddington were having the better of Peck and Foley.

As the game progressed both of the trailing Whittlesea rinks worked their way back into the game opening up a lead of 15 -20 shots on the big board. Despite some opportunities the Altona team were unable to bridge this gap for the second half of the game.

A late rally by Brett Foley’s rink was not enough and saw the final margin a 9-shot win to the debutantes.

Whittlesea showed they will be a tough opponent to beat on home turf with a team that has potential to again consolidate a position in the Premier League finals this year.
