Day 7 – 2018 State Champions Week

by Team BV

Mixed Pairs Final Jo Eagles & Jason Lunghusen (Leitchville BC) v Tiffany Brodie (Clayton BC) & Brett Spurr (St Kilda BC)

Mixed Pairs State Championship Semi-Finals

The 20th and final State championship of 2018 State Champions Week might be the one that kick-starts Victorian Tiffany Brodie’s march into the senior Jackaroos team.

Brodie (Clayton) and Brett Spurr (St Kilda) teamed up for a big 26-6 win over Leitchville duo Jo Eagles and Jason Lunghusen, who did a sensational job to fight their way through to a final few thought they would be a part of.

The Murray Mallee duo won a nailbiting semi-final over Goulburn Valley duo Mia Nowosad (Kyabram) and John Stokes (Shepparton Golf) on the final end, but were no match for retired State star Spurr and teenage wunderkind Brodie.

Two sixes in successive ends blew out what had been a reasonably close match until that point, with Brodie on fire with some superb lead bowls.

The 19-year-old will skip for Victoria’s women at the upcoming National Sides Championship in Darwin, but says one of her major aims over the next 12 months is breaking into the senior Jackaroos setup.

Already she is in the second-tier national squad, and says the final today was “the best bowls she has played in six months”. Darwin offers her a perfect springboard for the leap most expect she will take at some stage – into the main national setup.

For Spurr, victory caps off a big month after his downwards step from Melbourne Metro Pennant Premier Division to Division 1 this season proved a successful one.

Appointed coach at St Kilda for 2017-18, Spurr guided the Saints into Premier Division for next season, returning the ex-Bundoora RSL player to the big show.

The mixed pairs semis and final brought down the curtain on 2018 State Champions Week at Bendigo East BC.
Meanwhile, Bowls Victoria’s State Champions Week raffle of a set of Henselite bowls and bowls bag has been run and won. Bendigo East member Dot Saville is the winner. Thank you to all who entered.
Bowls Victoria would also like to thank all those at Bendigo East Bowling Club for their amazing contribution to a most successful 2018 State Champions Week. We’d also like to acknowledge the generous support of City of Greater Bendigo for the event.
