Day 1 – 2018 State Champions Week
Last year’s three-time State champion Kylie Whitehead is through to her second final of 2018 after a busy Day 1 of State Champions Week at Bendigo East Bowling Club.
Lead Whitehead (Wodonga), second Kerri Leask and skip Mary Tragardh won through their women’s triples rounds to book a final berth.
They beat a Strzelecki region team skipped by Jenny Miller in the round of 16, Susan Collins from Burwood District in the quarters, and a semi-final over Lorraine Burke, Desiree Macaulay and Ann McCarthy 20-13.
Whitehead has already qualified for the Under 25 women’s singles final on Day 5 of competition. There she will meet 15-year-old Kira Bourke in a mouth-watering match shaping as one of the best of State Champions Week.
Whitehead, Leask and Tragardh will find out whom their women’s triples final opponents are on Day 2.
In the men’s fours, Essendon’s Jordan Yates, Darren Burgess, Jay Bye-Norris and Anthony Flapper won through to the final, with their opponents yet to be decided.
Flapper’s four defeated a Yarraville-Footscray outfit skipped by Ray Coulter 22-9 in their semi-final.
No finals were decided on Day 1, with the first of 15 State championships on offer here to be decided on Day 2.
