Midlands BC gets down to business

by Team BV

Midlands Golf Bowls Club recently held their annual Corporate/Barefoot Bowls tournament over six weeks, with 30 teams of four bowlers, all of whom were first-time bowlers.

This year the number of participants has increased to 120 which is the highest since the tournament began, and Midlands is delighted with this response.

For the first five weeks the teams of four from Ballarat businesses participate in two games of six ends with the finals held on the sixth night, and the winners in each division receive prizemoney and trophies donated by the tournament sponsors, Bendigo Bank and Eureka Lending Group.

Now in its sixth year the teams can have a mix of gender, but the members must be first-time bowlers which gives every participant a chance to learn the basic skills, rules and the etiquette of lawn bowls, all under the watchful eye of our Midlands Bowls Club coach.

It is an aim to give each new bowler a positive experience on the bowling green to encourage further participation in the game.

The Corporate Bowls Tournament was initiated by the Midlands Bowls Club Committee with the support of the Club’s members who were keen to promote lawn bowls within the Ballarat community and also to use the tournament as a way to recruit new bowlers to the Club. This has been a successful strategy. After six years the Corporate Bowls Tournament has grown into a very successful Midlands Bowls Club event and is well supported by the broad business community.

The tournament was given the name of “Corporate Bowls” because the members who make up the teams are employees of a diverse range of Ballarat organisations, including manufacturing, retail, trades , health and professional services. By participating in the tournament an opportunity is provided for all new bowlers to network and socialise with representatives from other Ballarat organisations.

Midlands Bowls Club has also benefitted from the Corporate Bowls through its members volunteering to organise and run the event which has promoted teamwork and shared responsibility to ensure the success of the event. More broadly, the Midlands Golf Bowls Club benefits from the opportunity to promote its facilities and attract new members from the participants in the Corporate Bowls Tournament.

Ballarat is a growing city with new industries and professional services established each year and the Midlands Bowls Club is proud of their achievement through the Corporate Bowls to help welcome and connect these organisations and their members to the bowling community.

But most importantly, the Midlands Corporate Bowls provides an opportunity for new bowlers to learn about the game, have an enjoyable time on the green with other participants and to become regular lawn bowlers, now or in the future.
