Day 2 – 2017 Steller Vic Open
Leading NSW player Dawn Hayman and 2015 Vic Medallist Lisa Phillips have won a titanic struggle against two of the world’s best to book their place in the women’s pairs quarter-final at the 2017 Steller Vic Open.
Hayman (St John’s Park) and Phillips (Brighton) overcame dual world champion Carla Krizanic and world championships bronze medallist Kelly McKerihen by a single shot in their round of 16 clash at East Shepparton Bowls Club.
Earlier last season’s Australian No.1 Krizanic and defending Vic Open women’s singles champion Kelly McKerihen had won through another blockbuster knockout.
Krizanic and McKerihen had too much experience for two of Australia’s brightest juniors – beating Australian Under 18 champions Emma Simmonds (Irymple) and Kira Bourke (Ocean Grove) 20-6 – before Hayman and Phillips upended them 14-13.
You can watch the McKerihen v Bourke match above.
In the men’s pairs, locals have made a strong stand, with Kyabram and Shepparton Park pairings among the first into the last 32.
Kyabram duo Rob Sceney and David Cartwright (skip) won their way through sectional play and their first two knockout matches to move into the last 16.
Shepparton Park’s Peter Matthews (skip) and late addition, Rosanna’s Ian Crawford, also moved into the last 32.
Crawford, who replaced Lynton Burkitt late, and Matthews now face a difficult contest against defending Vic Open men’s pairs champions Brad Marron (Bendigo East) and Lee Schraner (Rosny Park Tasmania), who looked in ominous touch in their opening two knockout games.
