2017 Sorrento Primary School Challenge

by Team BV

Now in its third year, the 2017 Primary School Lawn Bowls Challenge will be held at Sorrento Bowls Club, Hotham Road Sorrento (rear David Macfarlan Oval) on Wednesday June 21.

The number of competitors has nearly doubled this year involving 88 children from eight peninsula schools occupying all available rinks at the Club and involves:

Sorrento Primary School
St. Josephs Catholic Primary School Sorrento
Tootgarook Primary School
Rye Primary School
Rosebud Primary School
Our Lady Of Fatima Primary School, Rosebud
Red Hill Consolidated School and
Boneo Primary School

The challenge involves Year 5 and Year 6 children and the winning team is selected from shots up over 12 ends.

Sorrento Bowls Club members will act as official markers and measurers during the event, which will see 22 teams of four playing on eleven rinks.

Play will start at 10am after a preliminary briefing, and conclude around 2pm when Sorrento Bowls Club President Brian McGrath will present trophies to the winning team and runners-up.

Prior coaching sessions are expected to fine tune bowling techniques for the big day.

The challenge is co-ordinated by Michelle Richens, PE Teacher at Sorrento Primary School and all children have demonstrated great enthusiasm for the activity to be included in their schools winter sports program.

The event is sponsored by Prentice Real Estate of Sorrento and Rye.

Last year’s winners, Our Lady of Fatima School in Rosebud will be looking to repeat their success but are facing keen competition from 21 other teams on the greens

Spectators are welcome to attend.

Note: If inclement weather cancels the match, it will be rescheduled on Wednesday, June 28.
