Inaugural Girls Sport Victoria Bowls Competition

by Team BV

To celebrate a new partnership with Girls Sport Victoria (GSV), the inaugural GSV Bowls competition took place last Friday at MCC Kew Sports Bowling Club.
90 girls from across six GSV schools took part in three games of bowls at the venue, enjoying the experience of playing a new sport as well as the strategy of the game.
The event began with a brief information session & demonstration about the objective of the game, as 95% of the students were stepping onto the green for the first time.
After a brief explanation, the students began bowling and tested out their skills in tough winter-like conditions.
As per the rules of this event, teams could use a ‘powerplay’ option to double their shots for one end. The girls were fast to learn that this game was all about strategy:
In a round one match in Zone 5, Sion team 1 lead Mentone team 2, 5 shots to 0.
With one bowl left and a power play in use, the Mentone 2 student bowled and managed to find 3 shots in the last end; giving Mentone the six points and the unlikely win, 6-5!
There were many great bowls and improvement as the afternoon went on, which was great to see in such a short amount of time.
After the three games, had been completed, each Zone winner was given a certificate to take back to their school.
Congratulations to each Zone Winner:
Zone 1 – Sacre Coeur, Mentone 5
Zone 2 – Korowa 1
Zone 3 – Korowa 2, Mentone 7, Mentone 4
Zone 4 – Ivanhoe 7
Zone 5 – Ivanhoe 1
Zone 6 – Our Lady Mercy College 1
Bowls Victoria would like to thank Annie Gibson and Girls Sport Victoria for the organisation and assistance with running this inaugural event. Also, to MCC Kew Sports Bowling Club for their continued support of our School Bowls Programs and to Sacre Coeur, Korowa Anglican Girls School, Mentone Girls Grammar School, Our Lady of Mercy College, Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School & Our Lady of Sion College who braved the tough conditions and picked up a brand-new sport with ease!
Bowls Victoria are looking forward to linking these six GSV schools with their local bowling clubs and encourage more schools in the GSV network to take up the game for next year!
