Day 7 – State Champions Week
It will be a long drive home, but a worthwhile one for Warrnambool Bowls Club’s Paul O’Donnell, Tristan McArthur and Peter Pangrazio as the trio became State men’s triples champions on the final day on 2017 State Champions Week.
McArthur, Pangrazio and skip O’Donnell won a thrilling final against Strzelecki region’s Ron Burge, Wayne Parks and Frank Seaton – all from the Inverloch club by a single shot.
The 14-13 result came in a match which went right down to the last bowl of the 18 ends – the Inverloch team picking up one shot but not the two they needed to take the match to an extra end.
Meanwhile, Gippsland duo Gail McKenzie and Lucy Dalli picked up their second silver medal of 2017 State Champions Week – this time the women’s triples.
Yarra Region’s team – Sue Ferguson (Donvale), Tris Doolan (MCC Kew Sports) and skip Makayla Gibson (Bundoora RSL) – defeated them 19-11 in the final.
Gibson’s trio were on fire from early in the contest and opened up a big lead – shortened to five shots late before the Yarra ladies steadied and closed out the match. It was a far cry from the Yarra team’s semi – won by a single shot from Tocumwal Golf’s Jane Ritchie, Effie Eaton and Kay Beare (Central Goulburn Murray).
The Gippsland ladies lost their women’s pairs final on Day 6 to Ovens & Murray’s Kerri Leask and Mary Tragardh.
Meanwhile, Ovens & Murray completed back-to-back wins in the Vic Shield awarded to the region with the most points from all disciplines at State Champions Week.
