Day 6 – State Champions Week
In a match full of tension, lead changes and dead ends which hung in the balance for more than three hours, Johnny McCarron and Ben Hubber of Glenroy Bowls Club have taken out the 2017 State Men’s Pairs Championship at State Champions Week.
McCarron and Hubber beat the brave Bundoora RSL duo Luke Aiello and Adam Galloway 19-14 at Bendigo East Bowling Club on Day 6 of the 2017 State Championships – the match turning on a huge five engineered by Hubber late in the match.
The Glenroy duo, representing Northern Gateway, trailed 14-12 before Hubber produced some magic to put them up 17-14 after 16 ends of 18.
The final two ends took more than 35 minutes to play, with Galloway killing one end with a perfect drive as McCarron and Hubber held several shots and what appeared the match.
But eventually McCarron and Hubber picked up successive singles to close out the match against their Yarra region opponents, and secure the State title.
Ovens & Murray’s Kerri Leask and Mary Tragardh are the 2017 State women’s pairs champions after beating Gippsland’s Gail McKenzie and Lucy Dalli 22-16 in their final.
Leask and Tragardh controlled the match from the start, holding a 22-11 lead with two ends to play.
Despite a spirited effort from the Gippsland duo – including a wonderful three engineered by Dalli on the penultimate end, they were unable to bridge the gap.
Tragardh was particularly commanding, producing some wonderful shots at critical times.
