Midweek Metropolitan Pennant Grand Final Results
It was always going to take something special in a grand final to derail a team which had been unbeaten all season in Taylor Bowls Premier Division.
And that’s exactly what Glenroy produced to upset Clayton in Midweek Metropolitan Pennant’s top division, winning a two-shot thriller at Lalor Bowling Club to be crowned 2016-17 Premiers.
Clayton went into the grand final unbeaten in 19 matches – 18 regular season encounters and the qualifying final in which they beat Glenroy.
But aided by wins on two rinks, Glenroy’s hopes then came down to Susan Howes against Clayton’s world championships medallist Kelly McKerihen in the final end.
Howes had twice saved difficult situations in the late ends, and did so for a third time by snatching away Clayton’s hold of shot and converting it into a shot for the Roys. McKerihen could not salvage anything with her final shot and Glenroy had sealed victory.
