Victoria v Tasmania – Day 3
Victoria has retained both trophies in their annual Test series against Tasmania – but had to do it the hard way in the men’s series.
Victoria’s women had their 2016 series wrapped up on day two after the third Test, and ran out 4-1 overall series winners after splitting the two Tests on day three at Spreyton Bowls Club in Devonport.
But the men’s series finished tied at two Tests each, with one Test drawn, allowing Victoria to retain the annual trophy as the previous year’s champion.
It came down to the final end of the final Test, as Tasmania had taken a 2-1 series lead by winning the fourth Test by two shots in a morning nail-biter.
In the fourth Test, Tasmania led by as many as 17 shots early in the match, before the Vics clawed back to make a match of it.
Going into the last three ends, the match was tied at 51-all before Tasmania grabbed two shots to seal victory.
The fifth Test brough more high drama – Tasmania taking a one-shot lead with two ends to be counted, before Victoria grabbed another five shots across the final two ends to seal the Test and salvage the series.
Victoria’s women posted a 55-42 victory in their fourth Test, but lost the dead fifth Test 52-47 for a 4-1 overall result. Rookie skip Tiffany Brodie had a series to remember, skipping her rink to five wins from five Tests.
The women’s series victory allowed Altona Bowling Club’s Gayle Edwards to celebrate her 200th Test for Victoria in style – receiving her pin for the milestone from Bowls Victoria President Barbara Gilbert at Spreyton Bowls Club with her daughters Blaine and Brooke also playing in the series.
