Ekera Dental Over 60 State Singles – Day 2
Northern Gateway’s Terry Ryan and West Coast’s Joy McGrath are the 2016 Ekera Dental Over 60 State Singles champions.
Ryan (Essendon BC) and McGrath (Portland) won their respective men’s and women’s singles finals at Ocean Grove Bowling Club, triumphing over two days of competition on perfect greens.
Ryan, who had been eliminated in the round of 16 last year, met his target of getting to 2016’s Day 2 – and then went to the next level in beating Ian Hilsley (Traralgon BC/Strzelecki) 21-11 in the final.
He overcame a tough semi-final start – in which he trailed State player Ian Ross (Bendigo BC) 8-1 before fighting back for a memorable 21-17 win.
There was no such slow start in the final – Ryan himself out to a 7-1 early lead and overcoming Hilsley’s comeback mid-match to post a strong win.
McGrath faced off against Ocean Grove local Joan Tennent in the women’s final, but started well and didn’t relent to post a 21-8 victory over the Geelong region representative.
Both ladies had won tense semi-finals to get to the final – Tennent by a single shot over Moama’s Marilyn Stephenson.
It was a second successive runners-up finish in the event for Tennent, who was beaten in the final by Edna Anderson last year.
