Barrie ready for the Olympics of bowls
The excitement is mounting for Barrie Lester as he prepares for the 2016 World Bowls Championships in Christchurch.
Representing Australia on world bowls’ biggest stage is something the Mulgrave Country Club player has wanted to do all his career.
A rich vein of form, plus a lot of hard work, has led to his selection in the Jackaroos – one of three Victorians chosen for the November 29 to December 11 event alongside Aaron Wilson (Clayton) and Carla Krizanic (Sunbury).
Lester can’t wait for what he calls “the Olympics of bowls”.
“With plenty of work on the greens, in the gym and working on mental toughness I’m all set,” he said.
“Thirty-four countries will compete, with every game played at the highest level.
“To have three Victorians in the event is a huge achievement in itself. The support from my club Mulgrave Country Club has been phenomenal. I can’t wait to put on the green and gold and stake our claims on some gold medals.”
Lester is one of Victoria’s Regional Bowls Managers, and will be unavailable for RBM duties from November 22 to December 12.
