2016 Victorian Open – Day 4

by Team BV

It was a clash of the mixed pairs titans.
In the end, the defending Victorian Open champions lost, and with it went their title defence on Day 4 of the tournament.
Nick McIntyre (Whittlesea) and Lisa Phillips (Melbourne BC) found themselves in a brutal sectional match-up, facing Goulburn Valley guns Matthew Robertson (Benalla) and Di Hands (Shepparton Park) at Numurkah – one of the 17 venues being used for the Vic Open.
In the end local knowledge won the day as Robertson and Hands overcame the 2015 champions 18-14, then went on to win arguably the toughest section of any at this tournament and enter the mixed pairs knockout stage.
But their run was short-lived once into the knockout stage, as Michel Papeix (Terrigal, NSW) and Coral Milligan (Highton) took the local hopes out in the first elimination round.
Yarrawonga’s Anne Miles made it through to her fourth last 16 finish at this year’s Victorian Open, partnering Dennis McHarry (Shepparton RSL) into the business end of the mixed pairs.
Miles is also through to the women’s singles and women’s pairs last 16, and the women’s pairs quarter-finals.
Miles and McHarry claimed the scalp of Australian representative Carla Krizanic and teenage State player Lachie Morison on the way to the last 16.
Others to book their spots in the mixed pairs last 16 include Jayden Sylvester (Fitzroy Victoria) and Jane McMenaman (Leopold Sportsman’s), Bendigo-based Julie Ross (Golden Square) and Ian Ross (Bendigo), and 2012 Vic Open mixed pairs champs Lee Schraner (Rosny Park, Tasmania) and Gayle Edwards (Altona).
