New features, new season at Sorrento BC
Federal Member for Flinders, The Hon. Greg Hunt, officially opened the 2016/17 lawn bowls season at Sorrento Bowls Club.
The Club (now in its 82nd year) is celebrating several good things this season – in particular the installation of new kitchen equipment and aluminium seating outdoors.
Funding for the new fixed seating was assisted by a grant from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme while the Mornington Shire Council installed a new oven and rangehood in the Clubhouse kitchen.
A light lunch at the Clubhouse for members and sponsors of many of the new seats preceded the official opening of the greens.
The first social game of lawn bowls for the new season commenced at 1pm and several key sponsors of the new fixed seating joined in – as well as Greg Hunt and his young son, James.
Greg Hunt delivered the first jack and Club Champions, Alison Watson and Alan Fincher delivered the introductory bowls for the season.
Sponsors Max Prentice of Prentice Real Estate, Sorrento & Rye; Peter Houghton of Rye Hotel and Kim Horne of White Lady Funerals, Rosebud – all sponsor a seat participants and one of our newest sponsors, Ben Tardrew of Tardrew Partners, Business Advisory & Tax Accounting, Rye – were all on hand during the day.
Local Nepean Ward Councillor Hugh Fraser also addressed the gathering providing an extensive update on local Shire developments and other information leading up to the Council elections.
The day concluded with an early evening barbecue .

The Clubhouse was at its Saturday best after a concentrated working bee earlier in the week saw members beavering away spring cleaning the Clubhouse and giving the extensive gardens a total makeover. .
Sorrento will field teams in Flinders Bowls Division Tuesday and Saturday Pennant this season, competing in Division 2, 4 and 5 on Saturdays and in Division 2 and 3 on Tuesdays.

The Club will be busy again hosting barefoot bowlers particularly over summer months with Hen’s and Bucks Parties particularly popular as well as several major fund-raising events for local charitable organisations including Peninsula Hospice and Friends of Los Palos.
