2016 Arm Bowling Nationals – Day 2

by Team BV

The Armed Vics have survived an intense afternoon of Pairs and Triples matches against the New South Wales Woomeras to edge closer to a record fourth National Arm Bowling Championship victory after Day 2 of the event at Broadbeach BC, host venue for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

After a very solid morning performance against NSW in Singles and Fours where the Vics took honours in five of the six matches played, the New South Wales team re-grouped and challenged the Armed Vics all the way in the three Pairs and three Triples encounters where further points were up for grabs.

At one stage during the afternoon games the Victorians were behind in all six of the games in progress and were looking only half the team that had graced the green in their morning encounter.

Several big ends made a difference and the determined Vics bounced back in front on two of the triples rinks and this seemed to instil confidence in the other pairs rinks as well and a mighty effort to scrape back lost early shots was starting to pay dividends.

Doug Corrigan’s triple of Ray Bezett, Mal Finch and skip Corrigan put together a stream of ends that resulted in a 25-10 win, along with the team of Ray Arnold, Phil Gude and Neil Crisp (s) who compiled unanswered ends to record a 25-14 victory.

The rink of Harry Dahllof, Denis Smyth and Stephen Coles (s) did a lot of heavy lifting to get back in front in their match after trailing by half a dozen shots at 5-11, only to see themselves drop a three on the last end after going in to the final end in front by two to frustratingly go down 15-16.

The tale of the pairs was an up and down affair and the Victorians didn’t look like having a winning combination until some last minute heroics from a couple of the teams saw a couple of draws achieved to share the afternoon points.

Phil Godkin and Barry Anset (s) were locked at 11 all with their counterparts after the 15 ends were completed and Ann Power and Lee Wesley (s) likewise with their opponents with their respective scores locked at 15 apiece.

Adele Ryan and Tony Long (s) had their hands full with a very accomplished NSW pairing and they fought gallantly to the very end finally succumbing 12-17 but not without having a real crack at it.

In the morning session on Day 2, Victoria won all three fours matches to claim a maximum of six points and two of the three singles games.

Host state Queensland and South Australia shared the honours for the day with 12 points each with many of their matches being very closely contested affairs.

Standings at the end of Day 2 sees the Victorians on 32 pts + 126 shots, New South Wales on 24 pts – 24 shots, Queensland 20 pts + 10 shots and equal on points but behind on shot difference South Australia on 20 pts – 112 shots.

Everyone is still in the mix for Championship honours on the final day to be staged Wednesday at Broadbeach BC.

Can the Armed Vics win their fourth national title in a row? Tomorrow will tell!
