2016 Arm Bowling Nationals – Day 1

by Team BV

Victoria narrowly leads the 2016 National Bowlers Arm Championship after day one on shot margin.
Aiming for a fourth successive national championship, the Armed Vics are equal with New South Wales on match points on 16 apiece after the opening day of the three-day event at Broadbeach Bowls Club in Queensland.
Victoria are 74 shots up and NSW 28 and it should be an interesting day two when these two teams meet in a series of matches that could well and truly decide who wins the overall Championship trophy.
Host state Queensland and South Australia are equal on points with eight points each with Queensland in deficit by -28 shots and SA -74.

In the morning session, Victoria started off in great fashion with five wins out of a possible six against South Australia.
Lee Wesley scored the first win for the Victorians with a 21-13 victory in his singles match and he was followed soon after by Neil Crisp who recorded a 21-17 win to give the Armed Vics two wins from as many starts.
Ray Arnold survived a very intense encounter in his first outing playing singles for the Armed Vics and he had to pull out all stops to score a three on the eventual last end of his match to win 21-19.
A win to the team of Harry Dahllof, Ray Bezett, Mal Finch & Doug Corrigan (s) of 25-7 delivered the first of the three fours with a win, closely followed by the rink of Phil Godkin, Ann Power, Phil Gude & Barry Anset with another 18 shot win 24-6.
The other four of Adele Ryan, Denis Smyth, Tony Long & Stephen Coles (s) held a rink win until the last bowl of the match from their South Australian opposing skip who after missing with his first delivery precisely moved the jack back to the ditch with a perfectly weighted swinging bowl to pick up two shots to win the match 12-10.
Pairs and triples matches were contested in the afternoon with results shared.
Two triples were successful and only one of the pairs with a couple of the pairs matches being very closely fought out right up until the last end in each.
