Altona All Star Singles Showdown
Altona Bowling Club has unveiled a new tournament it hopes can become Victoria’s answer to the Gold Coast’s prestigious Golden Nugget.
The All Star Singles Showdown is a brave new concept, featuring eight of the best bowlers based in Victoria battling it out in a sets play plus tie-break format.
The new tournament, to be held on Sunday, September 25 from 10am, features Australian internationals Barrie Lester and Aaron Wilson, Kiwi international Ali Forsyth, Victorian state representatives Dylan Fisher, Nathan Wilson, Nick McIntyre and Russell Green jnr, and Altona’s local star Michael Vesikko.
Victoria’s lack of an elite format similar to Tweed Heads’ successful Golden Nugget prompted Altona to test the water to see if bowlers and spectators responded.
New Altona BC bowls co-ordinator Dane McKinnon, also a State player, says the club has high hopes for the concept to grow and become an annual contest.
“We’re hoping it can go places. It’s an exciting concept, we’ve got great players involved. We want to get lots of people down to watch and support it,” McKinnon said.
There will also be live music, plus food and bar facilities throughout the day, as well as demonstrations from bowls shop The Resting Toucher.
