Sorrento Primary Schools Challenge

by Team BV

Forty-eight children from Years 5 and 6 from four primary schools competed in Sorrento Bowls Club’s annual Primary School Challenge.
The culmination of six months’ planning and co-ordination was rewarded by watching these 48 youngsters play like professionals out on the green – and judging by their reactions they were also enjoying themselves!
Participating schools were: Sorrento Primary School; Tootgarook Primary School Rosebud Primary School and Our Lady of Fatima Primary School Rosebud.
The results on the day did not reflect the standard of play of each team – as scores were based on shots up over 12 ends, so that only one team could take out the top slot for their school.
Results

Fatima Strikers with 17 shots up over Rosebud Renegades
Sorrento Superstars with 8 shots up over Toogarook Speedy Cheetahs
Sorrento Champs with 5 shots up over Fatima Blights Bowlers
Fatima Bowlers of Doom with 4 shots up over Rosebud Rockets
Sorrento Legends with 4 shots up over Fatima Flynns Mowing
Fatima Thunderstorms with 4 shots up over Rosebud Rabbits

Scoring was remarkably close reflecting the keen determination and focus of all players.

The main trophy was awarded to Fatima Strikers team on the day while trophies and certificates were presented collectively to the teams representing Sorrento, Tootgarook and Rosebud.
The event was supported via Mornington Peninsula Shire Flexi Grants Program and sponsored by Prentice Real Estate of Sorrento and Rye.
It was co-ordinated by Judith Mordech of Sorrento Bowls Club and Michelle Richens, Physical Education teacher at Sorrento Primary School in collaboration with her colleagues at other schools to encourage children to take up lawn bowls as an optional winter sport.

The program involved 30 Sorrento Bowls Club members in prior coaching sessions and on-day supervision and will take place again in June 2017.
