Under 18 Championship Week 2016

by Team BV

Fitzroy Victoria youngsters Tiffany Brodie and Jarryd Davies have taken out the Victorian singles championships during a high-quality 2016 Under 18 Championship Week at Clayton Bowls Club.
Brodie, a current Victorian senior player, had to beat two stars in fellow Victorian senior women’s player Tayla Morison and Glenroy’s Mikayla Long just to make the final.
There the 17-year-old overcame impressive central Victorian bowler Kira Bourke (Maryborough Golf), who at just 13 fought her way into the singles final.
But Brodie, who was an Australian Open quarter-finalist last year, ran out a 25-8 winner to claim the State Under 18 singles crown.
Davies, 14, set the tone with an impressive day one victory in quick time, before relishing the tough stuff in the quarter and semi.
He beat Bundoora RSL’s Riley Hodgson by one shot in the last eight in a match which gathered the entire crowd at Clayton for its climax.
Then he won through a semi against the always competitive Curtis Hanley, who won the Victorian Open pairs title against adults this season and helped Melbourne BC to the Premier Division grand final, 21-18.
Davies then saw off Moonee Valley’s Blake Andrews in the final – the 16-year-old also winning through a tough semi by the barest margin before reaching the decider.
With Davies’ and Andrews’ emergence, the impressive showing of Bourke who only graduated to the State under 18 team late last year, and a breakthrough tournament for Glenroy 14-year-old Lisa Trewarne in winning the women’s pairs and making the singles semis, what became clear during the tournament is the growing depth in Victorian junior bowls.
Witness Brodie’s tough qualifying route. First she had to fight her way through Morison at the quarter-final stage, winning an epic by a shot in one of the matches of the tournament.
Then she had to see off consistent State junior star Long in the semi.
Hanley and Todd Trewarne won the State Under 18 pairs, beating Davies and Mulgrave’s Kyle Kraus for the gold medal.
Todd’s sister Lisa teamed with Glenroy teammate Long for the women’s pairs title, leaving historians scratching their head to determine whether a brother and sister had ever won separate Victorian Under 18 titles in the same year.
And Joshua Kennedy, Patrick Lewis, Matt Leicester from Yallourn BC won an all-Gippsland open triples final, beating Hamish Beecroft (Drouin), Sarah Ashby (Yarragon) and Jarrod Grigg (Korumburra).
