Bowls Victoria vs Bowls SA Under 18 Test Series.
On the Queen’s Birthday long weekend action got underway at Moonee Ponds for the annual Bowls Victoria vs Bowls SA Under 18 Test series on Saturday afternoon in this much anticipated series.

In the first test the newer look Victorian girls side led by captain Tayla Morrison (Melbourne) , Tiffany Brodie (Fitzroy Victoria), Amelia Bruggy (Bendigo),  Mikayla Long (Glenroy), Natasha Russell (Clayton) recorded wins in three out of the four disciplines with the only blemish a loss in the pairs to their Bowls SA counterparts 13-16. Enough was done in the other three events to secure a 3-1 win. The Victorian boy’s team under captain Joshua Corless (Bundoora), Jayden Christie (Werribee), Curtis Handley (Clayton), Alex Skilton (Clayton), Jordan Yates (Glenroy) got off to a flyer and recorded four wins from the four events played even though the win in the singles by was by a slender one shot margin 21-20. At the end of Day One both teams had laid a solid foundation for the remainder of the weekend by winning the all-important first test.

Sunday morning the wind got up and the conditions tested everyone’s skill level to the max in what were very difficult conditions. The Victorian girls took all before them in the second test and sealed victory in their series by winning the Second Test 3-1 again and with the pairs still not able to salute the judge although they only went down by one shot 15-16. The BV males were facing a dogged opponent who refused to surrender as the two teams shared the second test spoils at 2-2 with the Vics this time losing the singles & fours.

The Third Test started late Sunday afternoon with the Victorian females winning one and losing one of the disciplines contested. The Vic girls were not able to capture a win in any of the three pairs games contested going down in their final encounter 14-18, but the triples were able to hold the fort with a 23-16 win to share points for the beginning of the last test.
The Victoria guys set up their third test assault with wins in both the Pairs and Triples and both sides headed into the final singles and four’s matches with their series wins sewn up.

In the two final matches played for each team the BV females scored a win and a loss. A big win in the fours 26-6 and a loss by five in the singles 16-21 to tie the Third test but win the series two wins and a draw. The Victorian males showed great character to secure their series win with a comprehensive win in the singles 21-11 and a one shot ripper of a game 14-13 in the fours to also wrap up their series with two wins and a draw.

Comments provided from BV Under 18 Squad Manager Louise Morison summed up the weekend perfectly, “A great test series by all players with highly skilled games in all disciplines. The conditions were quite difficult at times but the players kept their nerve and enthusiasm levels up to get over the line. Everyone is very proud of their efforts”.

Bowls Victoria wishes to acknowledge Bowls Clayton’s continued sponsorship and support of the BV Under 18 side and thank Moonee Ponds Bowling Club in presenting their club for this event.

The Under 18’s now begin a very busy month that sees them conducting an Observation Day at Vermont South BC in a little over a week’s time on 20 June and the week after at Shepparton Park BC on 27 & 28 June for their trials for the National Under 18 Championships to be conducted in the ACT in September at the Tuggeranong BC.

From 4-6 July the Victorian Under 18’s will be hosting a representative team from Wellington NZ for a series of matches to be played at Shepparton Park BC. This is a return visit from the Wellington Region who hosted the Victorian’s in 2014. Click here to view the details of who has made it into the Gold and Silver Squads for the Under 18’s for the coming season’s activities. It’s from these squads that representative teams will be selected for test series in 2015-16.

Good luck to all of the squad members who’ll be trialing for these teams!
