Moonee Ponds Into Main Event

Preliminary final blitz at Burwood

In a dominant performance at the magnificent Burwood Bowls Club today, the Moonee Ponds side booked its berth in next Sunday’s Henselite Metropolitan Premier Division pennant grand final when it thrashed Altona by 57 shots.

They will face defending champions Clayton at the Mulgrave Country Club in a replay of last week’s qualifying final, which they lost heavily.

But team captain Mark Jacobsen had a word of warning for any doubters. “We were poor last week, but have worked hard on the track since and will give a much better account of ourselves,” he said.

“Brett Spurr has returned to the skipping role with gusto and is in great form, while our win here today gives us a huge confidence boost.

“We respect the Clayton side and know it will be one hell of a contest, but we’re up for it.

“It’s a two-horse race and will all come down to who steps up on the day.”

Moonee Ponds launched an early assault on the Altona side to lead by 17 after 25 and went into afternoon tea leading 58-30 with 49 ends registered.

Big occasion player Brett Spurr, the hero of Moonee’s grand final win against Altona two years ago, and his rink of Robert Doody, David Mortimer and Colin Doolan were the prime movers, leading Altona’s Brad Peck, Ben Loughlin, Chris Annett and Peter Condon 17-2 after 11.

Recently appointed national coach Steve Glasson showed he is still a force to be reckoned with when he steered his MP team of Garry Ball, Nathan Murray and Winston Brackley to a 15-6 lead over Brenton Coad, Gary Matheson, Shane Herring and Rob Culbert; while MP’s enigmatic Mark Jacobsen and his cohorts Chris Ball, Richard Kopcewitz and Ben Hubber also coveted a nine-shot lead over Altona coach Shane Fordham, Ray Morrissey, Robert Cus and Jeremy Cassidy at 17-9.

Altona’s great white hope came in the form of veteran Paul Dorgan and his team of Matty Perkins, Len Callus and Neal Pattie, who held a five-shot buffer when they lead 14-9 against MP’s Wayne Turley, Barrie Lester, Matt McHardy and Nelson Ball.

At the resumption the anticipated Altona fightback never eventuated as the Moonee Ponds side took up where it left off, with Turley and his men outscoring Dorgan's rink 15-8 over the concluding stages to present the winners with an emphatic all-rinks-up victory.

Barooga Builder's Bonanza

Mitchell's state crown in senior singles thriller

In a final that resembled a cleverly scripted whodunnit, Geoff Mitchell from Barooga Sports emerged as Victorian Men's Over-60 Singles champion at the Burwood Bowls Club today.

He defeated Burwood's Rowan Sharp 21-19 in a dramatic soap opera that was played out in four acts.

The retired builder stole the spotlight early when he raced to an 11-2 lead after just six ends before Sharp, a retired lawyer, countered with 10 shots to two over the ensuing six.

Sticking to his favoured short end policy, Mitchell again shot to centre stage when he collected seven over the next four ends to hold a seemingly insurmountable 20-12 lead, before Sharp regained the mat and went maximum length in a last ditch effort to capture the state crown.

In a classic demonstration of fine drawing Sharp collected seven well-crafted shots from the next three ends to loom at 19-20 as spectators drew breath in expectation of a fighting finale. And although it wasn't the greatest end of the finals, it was a tension packed cameo when Sharp held two not-so-close counters before Mitchell drew the absolute shot. And when Sharp's final despairing attempt to dislodge Mitchell's offending bowl slid harmlessly past its target the Barooga champion claimed the title.

It was Mitchell's first state win, while Sharp had to be content with a second successive runner-up finish in championship play. Last season he was defeated by a single shot in the state champion of champions final at Darebin by Chalambar's Grant Seeary, who went on to capture the national crown and will represent Australia at the world championship in Hong Kong later this year.

The two protagonists in the main event were easily the outstanding competitors in the field having only surrendered a total of 25 shots in their three matches leading to the final.

In this morning's semi finals Mitchell outgunned the aggressive Kevin Deer from Keysborough after scores were tied at the 16-end mark, while Sharp, who trailed 3-6 against Altona veteran Mick Mather early in the match, hit his straps over the closing stages to record a comfortable seven-shot win.

Owing to an earlier wash-out resulting in the need to re-schedule Semi-Finals, the Grand Finals in the Saturday A & B Competitions were conducted on Saturday 26 February 2011 at Alphington BC.

In the A competition Glen Waverley overcame Yarraville Footscray in their Semi-Final to register a 48-28 win and book their place in the decider, whilst their opponents Doncaster returned a 55-30 scoreline against Dandenong RSL/Rec to claim their spot. With both sides posting strong wins in the semis it was hard to establish who would start favourite in the Grand Final, but it was Glen Waverley who had all the answers over Doncaster on the day as they recorded a 58-29 win.

The B Semi-Final delivered it's other Grand Finalist to take-on Ferntree Gully who were the recipients of a Bye, and it was Hampton who survived a close encounter with Yarraville/Footscray's No.2 side getting up 46-41 to reserve their place in the Grand Final. It was Hampton who outlasted a determined Ferntree Gully and recorded a 52-43 win to clinch their title.

Competition Convenor and BVOR Pat Hyde declared the season's competition and finals series an outstanding success, and conveyed thanks to all clubs for their participation and co-operation during the season.
